Resolution Revolution Success Stories

Joy's Story:

Since last June, Joy has been recovering from a spinal cord injury that left her temporarily paralyzed. Following surgery and rehab, her doctor recommended that she lose weight as part of her recovery. In September, Joy joined the Y and began to exercise every day.

"By December 2011, my pace had gradually improved from a slow walk to faster walking interspersed with jogging. I started seeing my fantastic trainer, Jess Rigo, at the YMCA. At the suggestion of my surgeon, Jess helped me start on a core strengthening program. This winter, I signed up for the Resolution Revolution challenge at the YMCA and in the past 9 weeks I have lost 21.8 lbs. Beginning in February 2012 I told my trainer Jess that I was ready to add total body weights and she gave me more exercised to add to my routine.

Since I started exercising and changing the way I eat (about 7 months ago), I have lost a total of 76 lbs. and counting. I've regained full strength in my legs and feet, but am still numb down part of my right leg and foot. I visit the YMCA daily. The services they provide, especially the support and encouragement of my trainer, as well as the wonderful childcare staff have made this weight loss possible. I feel better than ever." -Joy

Scott's Story:
"I just turned 41 in December and went in for a routine physical.  The Doc wanted to put me on both cholesterol and blood pressure medicine. I thought to myself, wow that's not good, there's got to be a better way. Add to the fact that I have two-year-old twin boys, and that's all the motivation that I needed. My wife mentioned that she wanted to look into the YMCA for our family, and I thought, no time like the present. I went in, signed up the family, and noticed the Resolution Revolution information on the desk. I thought what do I have to lose, right?

My first weight check was January 2nd...I stepped onto the scale and cringed at the number I saw, 245 pounds. I think I worked out 5 times that week, really watched what I ate and the following Monday got back on the scale, 239 pounds. Worked out again that week, next weigh-in, 235.4. Then over the past few weeks down another 4.8 pounds. I'm starting to notice small changes, and others are too. That's all the motivation that will keep me coming back every chance that I can.  The Y has such great equipment, I can hit the treadmill, turn on the television and an hour flies by.

My ultimate goal is to lose enough weight and gain the confidence to join the outdoor pool this year! I hope this helps, I know it's helping me!" -Scott

Cheryl's Story:

"I am a 41 year old mother of 4 who workouts at your West Chester and sometimes Kennett facility 4-5 days most weeks. I have always been pretty disciplined as far as my exercise schedule goes, but have not always been good at making healthy food choices.

As a busy mom, I wasn't taking the time to prepare myself a healthy low fat meal. Instead I found myself snacking throughout the day, or eating the kids left overs. I love to cook as well, and would also find myself nibbling as I prepared the meals. Although I exercise often, the weight slowly crept up over the years.

When I stepped on the scale for the first weigh in, I was so discouraged. I couldn't believe that I had allowed myself to get to that point. I knew something had to change. I didn't have the energy anymore that I used to, I was more irritable, and just felt overall unhealthy.

What I like about Resolution Revolution is the accountability. Knowing that I have to step on the scale each week and that my weight loss/gain would be posted for hundreds to see was definitely an incentive. I also like the recipes that are available each week.

Currently I am on day 6 of an 11 day cleanse/detox in which I have experienced great results. More than anything, it's made me realize that I do not need to consume as much as I do, even exercising like I do. In fact, I have found I have had as much or more energy while maintaining a much lower caloric intake. (ie: my workouts include...cycling, body combat, 20/20/20, step, body bar, Zumba, elliptical, and sometimes swimming laps).

Although I have a long road ahead of me, I am mentally and physically ready for the challenge. I am encouraged by my success so far. I love what Jen, one of your instructors at the WC YMCA has on her biography. I believe it is a weight watcher quote that says "nothing ever tastes as good, as being thin feels". Although I am not thin yet, each day is a step in the right direction and I feel better than I did the day before.

Thank you for your beautiful facility. I am so thankful to have such a great place to exercise. You have a fantastic staff and offer so many wonderful programs for your members. One of my favorite things you do is the Hydration/BMI and blood pressure screening. I also really appreciate the kids area. My son loves going, and it's such a great stress reliever for me to be able to workout and know my 4 year old son is in great hands.

Regards,
Cheryl"
