The commendation was issued by the Chairman of the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley Board of Directors, James M. Herr, who congratulated the aquatic staff for making the Y’s pools even safer for the organization’s 50,000 youth and adult members.

The YMCA of the Brandywine Valley converted its 16 pools to the Ellis Lifeguard Program this summer. This change ensures that YMCA aquatic staff are guarding pools using Ellis techniques, widely regarded as the most rigorous, best lifeguarding practices in the country.  The Ellis Lifeguarding Program provides a single, comprehensive all-inclusive lifeguard training program combining first aid, CPR, lifeguarding, oxygen support & AED use. All YMCA lifeguards are now licensed by Ellis, and are required to attend monthly in-service trainings to maintain their licenses. Guards are also required to renew their license each year.

Welcome Octorara YMCA, the newest and 6th branch of the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley.

At the start of business on Monday, October 2nd, after almost 18 months of careful consideration and planning, all current Octorara Community Recreation Commission programs are being operated by the Octorara YMCA, the newest and sixth branch under the YMCA of the Brandywine Valley.

In addition to experiencing many positive changes over the next several months, Octorara area residents should find this initial transformation to be seamless and they will continue to enjoy superior quality programs and customer satisfaction.

The Octorara YMCA is in the process of securing a two-year lease at the community center where it will continue its operations on a short-term basis. Long-range plans include purchasing land and breaking ground on a new facility sometime in 2009. A location in Atglen Borough is currently being explored as to its affordability, but no official decisions have yet been made.

Octorara YMCA Executive Director Brian Wenzka will be spending the next few months developing a new board of volunteers who will be instrumental in helping the Octorara YMCA achieve its aggressive goals. In 2007, the new YMCA will kick off our Good Kids Campaign to raise funds for financial assistance, and eventually a capital campaign to raise funds for the new facility.
